JOIN THE INNER CIRCLE OF A.M.ORTIZ

Thank you for joining my inner circle. People often ask me how much research it took to map out the legal suspense of The Defence Never Rests. My answer is always the same: None.

My family moved to Toronto when I was two, but my father took us back to Medellín when I was twelve and a half. I grew up as a teenager in the absolute eye of the storm—the era when Pablo Escobar and his cartel ruled the country. I will never forget being fifteen years old, walking into a local bakery in Envigado, and looking directly at Pablo sitting there with two other men.

In Medellín during those years, encountering the cartel underground wasn't a matter of if—it was a matter of when.

I raised my pen to write this book because Erica's story is rooted in the very air I breathed. I know what it feels like to hold a room neutral while the world outside is screaming.

Two perspectives. One City. No Rules

In cartel-era Medellín, Erica is a prosecutor hunting the violence that killed her husband — unaware that her fourteen-year-old son has been weaponized by a gang leader who saw in him the same strategic mind Erica uses in the courtroom. The boy is now El Mono, architect of the barrio's most ruthless operation. Erica searches his room. Finds nothing. A prosecutor trained to read evidence calls the absence proof she's wrong — because Santiago learned to think like her, and a strategist doesn't leave traces in his mother's house.
